Nangreaves, BURY, BL9 6SP
The rambling, stone-built Lord Raglan is set beside a cobbled lane high on the moors above Bury, at the head of a former weaving hamlet, where lanes and tracks dissipate into deep, secluded gorges rich in industrial heritage. Beers brewed at the on-site Leyden microbrewery may be taken in the garden, where the throaty cough of steam engines on the East Lancashire Railway echoes off the River Irwell's steep valley sides below the towering Peel Monument. Reliable, traditional pub grub and changing specials take the edge off walkers' appetites. Try the chicken and mushroom pie, hot steak sandwich, or grilled halibut steak served with a lime and tomato salsa. There are beer festivals in the summer and autumn.
