Sheep Street, BURFORD, OX18 4LR
In a tranquil side street in this attractive Cotswolds town, the 15th-century Lamb is a dyed-in-the-wool, all round award winner. A welcoming atmosphere is generated by the bar's flagstone floor, log fire, cosy armchairs, gleaming copper, brass and silver and, last but not least, Hook Norton and Wickwar real ales. In fact, old-world charm and stylish interiors are a feature throughout. Take, for example, the elegant columns and mullioned windows of the courtyard-facing restaurant, where new chef Peter Galeski presents enticing menus, based extensively on local produce. Starters such as seared scallops, maple-cured pancetta, roast pumpkin purée and puffed wild rice could be followed by loin of venison, baby parsnips, red cabbage purée, ceps, plum, venison pot and juniper berry jus. If you have room for dessert, choose perhaps white peach soup and compressed peach, chocolate granola and passionfruit sorbet. The Garden and Fireside menu offers simpler fare - deli boards; salads; 31-day aged steaks; and dishes such as moules marinière and braised lamb shank, mash and seasonal vegetables. An extensive cellar holds over 100 wines.
