The Barringtons, BURFORD, OX18 4TN
This 17th-century inn has a long history and once witnessed the dispatch of Cotswold stone for buildings like St Paul's Cathedral. The pub's unusual name was chosen by former owner Jeremy Taylor, who had worked on the film A Man for All Seasons as a horse choreographer. The Sharp family took over in the mid-1980s and the interior is a veritable treasure trove of ancient oak beams, leather chairs and interesting memorabilia. The bar offers St Austell ales, as well as an extensive wine list. Matthew Sharp selects seasonal local produce for his European cuisine; he also offers one of the area's best specials boards for fresh fish, with daily deliveries from Brixham. Main course meat options include roast rack of Cotswold lamb, tomato and lentil ragout, confit new potatoes, fine beans and basil jus. Finish with orange cheesecake, poached rhubarb and ginger.
