Cleobury Road, Eardington, BRIDGNORTH, WV16 5LS
This 16th-century coaching inn was renamed in 1823 after the very young Princess Victoria stopped here en route between Shrewsbury and Worcester; when she asked where she was, came the diplomatic reply, 'halfway there ma'am'. An original Elizabethan mural has been preserved behind glass for all to enjoy, and the pub is renowned for a good selection of regional real ales, 40 malts, and around 100 wines. A dinner menu might offer home-made duck liver pâté; deep-fried brie with hot redcurrant sauce; or breaded wholetail scampi and home-made tartare sauce to start, followed by Shropshire beef with onions and mushrooms braised in Guinness and ale; 16oz Astbury Falls rainbow trout with lemon and rosemary butter; or home-made chicken curry, rice, poppadum, naan bread and pickles.
