The Masons Arms

Just a 10-minute stroll from the beach and located in a picturesque village, the peaceful gardens of this inn have sea views across a picturesque valley. Creeper-clad, it dates from 1360 when it was a cider house. Back then it was a smugglers' haunt and its interior has barely changed since those days: slate floors, stone walls, ships' beams, an old jail railing and a huge open fireplace used for spit roasts on Sundays all add to the time-warp charm. Food is a serious business here; where possible all ingredients are grown, reared or caught locally. Kick off with a starter of steamed River Exe mussels, white wine, garlic, cream, parsley and rustic bread and follow it with the baked pie of the day or a chargrilled Devonshire steak.
