BRANCASTER STAITHE, PE31 8BY
The White Horse offers stunning vistas over glorious tidal marshes across to Scolt Head Island, a four-mile long sandbar that's home to a nature reserve rich in birdlife. Reflecting the view, interior colours are muted and natural, with beach-found objects complemented by contemporary artworks. Scrubbed pine tables and high-backed settles in the bar create a welcoming atmosphere, while alfresco dining in the sunken front garden is a popular warm-weather option, perhaps accompanied by a pint of Adnams Ghost Ship. While the bar menu lists such things as tapas boards, superfood salad, and root vegetable crumble, the extensive, daily-changing menu in the airy conservatory restaurant (with two AA Rosettes) champions the freshest local seafood, delivered directly to the kitchen by the fishermen and the 'mussel men' next door. Typically on a winter menu, sourced herrings, cucumber and sauerkraut; or salt-baked celeriac cannelloni, Puy lentils and cauliflower velouté could precede duo of hogget, fondant potato, Brancaster Beer carrot and braised red cabbage; or gurnard fillets, pink fir potatoes, capers, shallots, gherkins, spinach and dashi. Leave room for lemon tart, goats' curd mousse and raspberry.
