Brook House Inn

BOOT, Eskdale, CA19 1TG

Few locations can rival this: Lakeland fells rise behind the inn to England's highest peak, whilst golden sunsets illuminate tranquil Eskdale. Footpaths wind to nearby Stanley Ghyll's wooded gorge with its falls and red squirrels, and the charming La'al Ratty narrow gauge railway steams to and from the coast. It's a magnet for ramblers and cyclists, so a small drying room for wet adventurers is greatly appreciated. Up to seven real ales are kept, including Yates Best Bitter and Langdale from Cumbrian Legendary Ales, and an amazing selection of 175 malt whiskies. Home-made food prepared from Cumbria's finest showcases the menus, so temper the drizzle with a warming bowl of home-made soup, or prawns in garlic butter spiced tomato chutney, followed by duck breast with orange and plum sauce; chicken Madras; or perhaps one of the vegetarian dishes such as Moroccan vegetable and bean casserole with rice and pine nut and apricot salad. Raspberry meringues or coffee torte with espresso sauce make a fine finish. This great community pub also takes a full role in the famous Boot Beer Festival each June.
