Billinge End Road, Pleasington, BLACKBURN, BB2 6QB
Out on Blackburn's western fringes, this pub is well placed for walks through pleasantly wooded countryside. Owned by the Ribble Valley Inns group, the unusual name celebrates the favourite attire of an early 20th-century landlord, a billycock being a felt hat. Wall lights fashioned from old weaving shuttles, lamps from cobblers' shoe stretchers, and artwork by north-west artist, Nicholas Saunders add to the character of the pub, where real ales include Thwaites Original and Wainwright. Holder of an AA Rosette, the kitchen concentrates on robust British cooking and regional produce. Warm Morecambe Bay shrimps with blade mace butter and toasted English muffin might precede slow-cooked Cumbrian lamb shank, purple sprouting broccoli, hot pot potatoes, mint jelly and rosemary gravy. Finish with jam roly poly and custard or home-made rice pudding. If the weather's good, eat and drink outdoors on the dining terrace.
