The Old Joint Stock

A former bank, this impressively colonnaded building was originally a library, designed by the same architect as part of St Philip's Cathedral opposite. The high-Victorian Gothic interior incorporates an immense domed ceiling, stately-home fittings and towering mahogany island bar. Speciality pies take up a chunk of the menu, which also features liver and onions; bangers and mash; and bacon and smoked cheddar steakburger. Fuller's, the owner, has developed the second floor as an 80-seat theatre for productions from Shakespeare to fashion shows. A beer festival is held twice yearly.
