The Old Joint Stock

This impressively colonnaded building was designed by the same architect as part of St Philip's Cathedral opposite. Originally a library and later a bank, its high-Victorian Gothic interior incorporates an immense domed ceiling, stately-home fittings and towering mahogany island bar. Pies take up a chunk of the menu, which also features bloody Mary sardines with toast; bangers and mash with red wine gravy; and evening snacks such as cheese straws. Fuller's, the owner, has developed the second floor as an 80-seat theatre for productions from Shakespeare to fashion shows. A beer festival is held twice yearly.
