Catherine Wheel

Arlington, BIBURY, GL7 5ND

This former blacksmiths has changed hands many times since J Hathaway opened it as an inn in 1856 but a warm welcome, good local ales and quality food remain its hallmarks. The beautiful Cotswold-stone building, stable courtyard and orchard date back to the 15th century and plenty of historical features remain. The short but appetising menu might include seared scallops with crispy duck confit, squash purée and red wine syrup; pot-roasted chicken with truffle mash, smoked bacon, shallots and peas; and king prawn and mussel spaghetti. There is a beer festival held every August Bank Holiday.
