12 Severnside North, BEWDLEY, DY12 2EE
Although unusual as a pub name today, a 'mug house' was a popular term for an alehouse in the 17th century. The Severnside address is a strong clue to its location - right on that river, with just a narrow cobbled road and some river's edge seating between it and the pub's flower-decked frontage. Purity Brewing Company's Mad Goose may be on duty at the bar alongside guest ales and regulars Timothy Taylor Landlord and Wye Valley HPA. Rosie's Pig cider makes a refreshing alternative, even during the Early May Bank Holiday beer festival which is held in the rear garden. The lunch menu includes a range of tummy-filling crusty bread sandwiches such as the doorstep chip butty; or choose one of the 10 Mug House platters served with salad, coleslaw, sweet pickled onion rings, Mug House pickle and a warm baguette. For those who enjoy a proper lunch, options for all three courses follow classic lines. A typical choice could comprise fresh mussels in white wine with garlic and cream; pan-fried liver and bacon with creamed potato, a rich onion broth and peas; and a dark chocolate and black berry fondant. The AA Rosette-standard Angry Chef (provenance unknown) restaurant comes into its own in the evening, when an adults-only policy comes into force. Seasonally-based dishes may include a starter of chicory smoked potato and butternut squash gnocchi with apple and celeriac remoulade, caper popcorn and parsley emulsion. Move on to venison fillet medallions, with braised oxtail croquette and fondant potato, buttered harlequin carrots, braised fennel, and red wine and chocolate jus.
