The Greyhound

BESSELS LEIGH, OX13 5PX

The best efforts to date the Cotswold-stone Greyhound suggest it's around 400 years old, when it was a coaching inn and forge. A plaque records how 19th-century landlord Alfred White began here what survives as Britain's oldest church-bell-hanging company. The Greyhound is set well back from a main road and in terms of appearance Central Casting couldn't have done better. Locally brewed beers are in the bar, and there's a good wine list. A comprehensive all-day menu leads you from steamed mussels to bread and butter pudding, by way of Greek lamb patties; cider-braised pig's cheeks; deep-fried haddock in beer batter; and sweet potato and cauliflower curry.
