The Oak on the Green

As its name suggests, this refurbished 17th-century pub overlooks Bearsted's pretty green and the front terrace, canopied under huge blue umbrellas, makes the most of its pleasant location. Once the village courthouse and prison, it is now a thriving gastro-pub. An eclectic modern menu offers an extensive choice, including Scottish steak (dry-aged up to 55 days) and pies (steak, port and stilton), alongside classic dishes like home-made sausages and mash, and imaginative specials, perhaps seared squid with garlic, chilli and coriander; and roast pork belly with rosemary and garlic gravy.
