Kings Head

Harts Lane, BAWBURGH, NR9 3LS

Old English roses and lavender fragrance the lanes in front of this low, rambling 17th-century pub, set in a cosy village of flint and brick cottages beside the River Yare. Behind the roadside brick house rambles an eye-catching half-timbered cottage, complete with bulging walls, wooden floors and log fires. Leather sofas and a vaguely rustic mix of furnishings add to the charm which attracts customers keen to engage with Pamela and Anton Wimmer's enticing menu of pub favourites and something that little bit special. The busy kitchen team relies on East Anglian suppliers for virtually all the ingredients; grilled pigeon breast, salted popcorn, sweetcorn purée and toasted seeds is a typically uplifting starter. There's plenty of seafood on the monthly-changing menu - witness the steamed salmon with warm salad of green beans, courgettes and peas. Gluten free options and daily specials add to the choices.
