Since the last edition of the guide appeared, Phil Cotton has taken over this delightful pub just off the River Avon towpath, opposite Royal Victoria Park. Described as both a country pub in the heart of a city, and as a 'secret oasis', it has a stripped-down, stylish interior and a lovingly restored, spacious beer garden, which Phil has refreshed with a grapevine canopy. Bath Ales, now elevated from microbrewery to regional brewery status, supplies many beers from its stable - here you'll find Barnsey (formerly Barnstormer), Festivity, Gem, Spa and Wild Hare. All food is home cooked, from the bar snacks to the main meals such as River Fowey mussels with cider and saffron sauce; honey and clove ham hock, piccalilli and cauliflower cheese; grilled cod with chorizo and haricot cassoulet; and grilled vegetable tart with rocket, parmesan shavings and potato salad. Children are served smaller portions from the main menu.
