The Yorkshire Bridge Inn

Ashopton Road, BAMFORD, Hope Valley, S33 0AZ

Named after the old packhorse bridge over the River Derwent, this early 19th-century free house is only a short distance away from the Ladybower Reservoir. Between 1935 and 1943, when it was created, two local villages were drowned and during periods of drought it's possible to see the remains of one of them. It was in 1943 that the RAF's 617 Squadron, known as 'The Dambusters', used Ladybower and two other nearby reservoirs for testing Barnes Wallis's famous bouncing bombs, later to destroy two important German dams. Back inside, views from the beamed and chintz-curtained bars take in the peak of Whin Hill, making it a jolly good spot for enjoying a pint of the unique Bombs Gone specially brewed for the inn at the Bradfield Brewery, and good-quality pub food made with fresh local produce. Sandwiches are all freshly prepared, with fillings from home-baked ham to hot tuna melt. Main meal starters include home-made cream of chicken soup; chicken liver pâté; or an ocean pot of smoked haddock, salmon and cod in white wine sauce. Next could come a home-made shortcrust steak and kidney pie; chilli con carne; grilled sea bass fillets with prawn and lemon butter, new potatoes and vegetables; or fresh dressed Filey crab salad. If you've walked to one of the reservoirs and back, look to the grill for a calorie replacing T-bone, sirloin or gammon steak, cooked to your liking without demur from a chef who doesn't insist on doing it his way. Bakewell pudding, or New York vanilla cheesecake finish a meal off well. A beer and cider festival is held in mid-May.
