Ashford Road, Badlesmere Lees, BADLESMERE, ME13 0NX
Built as a farmhouse in 1546, and an inn since 1728, today's pub is known for affordable home-cooked food and locally brewed beers, and as a live-music venue. Diners after something regional should try a Kentish huffkin, a traditional stone-ground flour bread roll with Kentish Blue cheese and spiced plum chutney. Or there's lamb hotpot and moglai lamb curry - the animals reared on the Kentish salt-marshes. Alternatives are locally shot pheasant in rich red wine and port sauce; fresh cod, smoked haddock and salmon fish pie; and breadcrumb-topped cauliflower, broccoli and leeks with mature cheddar sauce.
