The Waggoners

Overlooking a splendid village green, this 17th-century coaching inn was originally built to house the workers at nearby Brocket Hall. Now a busy food-driven pub run by experienced French owners, it retains much of its original charm in the cosy beamed bar where English ales are on offer alongside some 50 wines by the glass. In the comfortable restaurant, the French-inspired menus might include roast leg of lamb stuffed with rosemary and mushrooms or orange and pomegranate cake. In summer, bag a table in the sun-trap garden and sheltered terrace.
