Lamb Inn

The Square, AXBRIDGE, BS26 2AP

Parts of this rambling 15th-century building were once the guildhall, but when a new town hall was opened in 1830 it became an inn. Opposite is the medieval King John's Hunting Lodge, so christened in 1905 by an owner who chose to ignore the fact that John died over two centuries before it was built. The bars are heated by log fires and offer Butcombe ales; there's also a skittle alley and large terraced garden. Examples of pub favourites are beef and ale pie; chicken parmigiani; home-made curries; and salmon fillet supreme. Jacket potatoes, baguettes and sandwiches are available too.
