Cheapside Road, ASCOT, SL5 7QG
En route to Windsor Castle, Queen Victoria's carriage was allegedly sometimes spotted outside this 400-year-old, flagstone-floored, low-ceilinged pub, while what the history books call 'her faithful servant' John Brown knocked a few back inside. The sheltered garden makes a fine spot to enjoy a Fuller's real ale, a glass of wine and, for lunch, ciabatta like sausage and red onion marmalade or a ploughman's. For something more substantial try smoked haddock, spring onion and Atlantic prawn fishcake with parsley sauce, then free-range chicken breast on wilted spinach and dauphinoise potatoes with a chorizo and Puy lentil sauce.
