The Thatched Tavern

Cheapside Road, ASCOT, SL5 7QG

En route to Windsor Castle, Queen Victoria's carriage was allegedly sometimes spotted outside this 400-year-old, flagstone-floored, low-ceilinged pub, while what the history books call 'her faithful servant' John Brown knocked a few back inside. The sheltered garden makes a fine spot to enjoy a Fuller's real ale, a glass of wine and, for lunch, beef stew suet pudding; or London Pride-battered fish and chips. For dinner, try pan-fried chicken supreme; cider-marinated pressed pork belly and celeriac purée; or spaghetti, tenderstem broccoli, asparagus and cherry tomatoes. Baguettes and sandwiches are available too.
