Tufton Arms Hotel

This imposing, gabled building sits at the foot of Appleby's main street, close to the River Eden below the curvaceous fells of the wild North Pennines. There's an elegant, country house feel to the public rooms, where co-owner Teresa Milsom's design skills shine through, with astonishing attention to detail producing classic atmosphere and contemporary comforts. At the heart of the hotel, overlooking a cobbled mews courtyard, is the Conservatory Fish Restaurant, where David Milsom and his kitchen team's cuisine is complemented by a serious wine list. The menu covers all bases, with lamb shank, belly pork or home-made steak and ale pie as comforting standards, and local game presented as available. It's for the fresh fish dishes, however, that the Tufton has a particular reputation. Daily deliveries from Fleetwood are crafted into starters like smoked haddock and mushroom hotpot baked in cheese sauce; progressing to mains of seafood tagliatelle, or pan-fried hand-picked crab and salmon cake. Beer connoisseurs may enjoy the hotel's own house ale.
