The Anchor Inn

Lower Froyle, ALTON, GU34 4NA

A 16th-century, tile-hung farmhouse forms the nucleus of the Anchor. The stylish interior is all low ceilings, exposed beams, wooden floors and open fires, suggesting that little has changed for decades. In the intimate snug and saloon bar you'll find Marston's beers taking pride of place. The restaurant's two AA Rosette award recognises the quality of the regularly changing, locally sourced food that at dinner could be octopus carpaccio, crispy pig's ears, pickled grapes and spiced tomato; followed by hay-baked hake, sweet potato, asparagus, roasted palm hearts and red wine jus; or roasted cauliflower and truffle tortellini, coco bean cassoulet and confit shallot. For dessert, how about rhubarb pannacotta, salsa, pistachio tuile and rhubarb soup; or chocolate cake, raspberry sorbet and popcorn? Spacious and beautifully designed bedrooms, friendly and efficient service and on-the-doorstep country walks complete the picture.
