The George
ALSTONEFIELD,
Nr Ashbourne,
DE6 2FX
The nearby valley is much favoured by ramblers, many of whom seek well-earned refreshment at this friendly 18th-century coaching inn. Run by three generations of the same family, the current landlady warmly welcomes all-comers, as long as muddy boots are left at the door. The appeal of this fine pub, other than the wonderful location and welcome, includes a splendid range of real ales and wines by the glass, and excellent home-cooked food; fresh flowers, and candlelight in the evenings are elegant finishing touches. The pub's pesticide-free garden supplies home-grown vegetables, salad leaves and herbs in season, and other ingredients are sourced as locally as possible. A light lunch could comprise creamed wild mushrooms and leeks with toasted sourdough; a more filling option could be the trio of Tissington sausages with black pudding mash. Leave space for the Yorkshire rhubarb and frangipane tart, or apple and nutmeg crumble served with traditional custard.

We visited the George to celebrate my husband's birthday. The food was of exceptional quality and cooked to perfection. Especially worth a mention was the cauliflower soup with truffle oil and the roast beef was amazing. The staff were very welcoming and took the time to answer questions about the menu that our children had. The whole charm of this establishment was very pleasing and a return visit is assured. Beautiful location and beautiful venue, would definately recommend to anyone.
