The Bell Inn

ALDWORTH, Reading, RG8 9SE

Beginning life as a manor hall in 1340, The Bell has reputedly been in the same family for 200 years: ask landlady Mrs Macaulay, she's been here for over 75 years. A 300-year-old, one-handed clock still stands in the taproom 'keeping imperfect time', and the rack for the spit-irons and clockwork roasting jack are still over the fireplace. One might be surprised to discover that an establishment without a restaurant can hold its own in a world of smart gastro-pubs. But The Bell survives thanks to hot, filled rolls and cracking pints of Maggs' Magnificent Mild or a West Berkshire brew or a monthly guest ale plus local farmhouse ciders.
