Winter trips - additional requirements

In winter authorities insist on wheel chains and/or winter tyres for many resorts and passes.

Snow chain and winter tyre requirements for the most popular winter destinations in Europe.

In any country the driver is responsible for equipping and controlling their vehicle correctly. Drivers may be liable to a fine if they impede the normal flow of traffic or cause an accident as a consequence of not adapting their vehicle (tyres/snow chains) to the prevailing weather conditions.

Road conditions in winter in many resorts will be much more severe than anything encountered in the United Kingdom - The AA only recommends driving in extreme winter conditions if the driver is confident and the vehicle suitably equipped.

Tips for stress-free Continental driving

  • Display the appropriate identification letters
  • Fit external rear view mirrors to both sides of your vehicle (it's compulsory in Denmark for right-hand drive vehicles)
  • Motorcyclists and passengers must wear crash helmets in all countries
