Yorkshire Wildlife Park

If you thought zoos had gone out of fashion, think again - since opening in 2009, the park has established itself as one of Yorkshire's top attractions. Walk around between the landscaped enclosures - the pride of lions, rescued from neglect in a Romanian zoo, get nine acres to themselves - to see tigers, leopards and giraffes at a respectful distance. In the 'African Plains' field, zebras, antelopes, ankole cattle and ostriches mix and roam free. There are also walkthough areas where you can get really close to some of the animals - including Lemur Woods, Wallaby Walkabout and South America Viva. Meerkats are another favourite, and there's a herd of Bactrian camels. Regional food is championed at the Wild Cafe, and children love the dropslides and astraslides in the Jungle Play Barn. Top tip - leave your pet dog at home: they're not allowed on the site.
