National Railway Museum

Leeman Road, YORK, YO26 4XJ

Outside the immediate centre of the city, the National Railway Museum is the world's largest railway museum and a great place to explore. From record breakers to history makers, it's home to a vast collection of gleaming locomotives, restored carriages and wagons, including the Royal Trains, a replica of Stephenson's Rocket, the only Bullet Train to be seen outside Japan, and Mallard - the fastest steam locomotive in the world. With three enormous galleries, interactive exhibits and daily events in summer, the museum mixes education with fun, and is a 'must see' - even for non-train-buffs.
