Castle Howard

MALTON, York, YO60 7DA

The full magnificence of this grand 18th-century stately home is best appreciated from the south, where it is viewed in dramatic outline against the horizon. It may well seem familiar to you - two versions of Evelyn Waugh's tale of love and loss, Brideshead Revisited, have been filmed here. There are formal gardens and grounds of around 1,000 acres to explore. Inside, the sheer scale of the Grand Staircase and the vast, echoing rooms are imposing, and there is no denying the splendour of the bedrooms and dressing rooms that follow. On the occasion of Queen Victoria's visit in 1850, gas was first installed in the castle, and her entrance was heralded with a display of flames spelling out 'God Save the Queen' on the hall balcony. The Great Hall is a triumph of architect John Vanbrugh's art on an altogether different scale. Its vastness is accentuated by the heavy pillars that draw the eye upwards to the wrought-iron balcony of the gallery and the dizzying height of the painted dome. By comparison, the rest of the house seems positively domestic, but a series of glittering state rooms provide the setting for a collection of fabulous paintings.
