Parts and Labour benefit

For extra peace of mind you can add the Parts and Labour benefit to any level of European breakdown. Following a breakdown, this allows you to claim up to £500 (£300 for Short Break) towards esential parts and labour needed to get your vehicle on the move again.

Vehicles covered

AA European breakdown cover can be used for private cars, hire cars, motorbikes (over 200cc) and light vans of any age. With Lite and full cover, you can also cover campervans, motor caravans and minibuses.

Some restrictions apply, however, in order to make sure your vehicle will fit onto a recovery transporter:

  • Maximum weight: 3.5 tonnes (3500kgs) gross vehicle laden weight
  • Maximum length: 7m (23ft)
  • Maximum width: 2.3m (7ft 6in)
  • Maximum height: 3m (9ft 10in)

If your vehicle (including any attachments) doesn't meet these restrictions we may be unable to provide you with assistance.

Making a claim

Although we make every effort to cover repair costs on your behalf, sometimes you might have to pay the bill locally and then make a claim when you get home.

Adjusting your cover

As long as your European breakdown cover hasn’t started yet, you can change your vehicle or level of cover. You can also add the optional Parts and Labour benefit up until the start of your trip.

Once your cover has started, you can still extend it or add countries. If you wish to add new countries you must purchase cover for a new zone before leaving the zone you are covered in.

Renewing or cancelling your cover

We will write to you a month before your European breakdown cover is due for renewal. If you paid by direct debit, it will automatically renew and the payment will be taken from your account without you having to do anything.

All you need to know about AA European Breakdown Cover

Buying AA European Breakdown Cover

Can I buy European breakdown cover if I've already left home?

Yes, as long as you aren't already abroad. You can still buy cover from the AA shops at Dover or Folkestone, or you can call us on 08000 857 261 and we'll text your policy details to your mobile phone. If you're already on foreign soil, however, you won't be able to buy cover for that trip.

How soon can I get my documents if I buy AA European Breakdown Cover online?

You should receive your documents in the post within five working days. You'll also be given access to them online when you buy your cover so you can print them out then if you need them sooner.

Do you sell European breakdown cover for a one-way trip?

Yes, cover is available for just the outbound part of your trip. If you plan to travel back to the UK within 31 days of leaving your home though, you'll need to take out cover for the whole trip.

Can you issue European Breakdown Cover policies in joint names?

Yes we can but policies in joint names aren't currently available online. Call us on 08000 857 261 and we’ll be able to help you get cover in joint names.

About AA European Breakdown Cover

Is AA assistance in Europe the same as in the UK?

AA Patrols don't usually operate outside the UK so we'll arrange assistance from a local garage or motoring organisation instead. Unlike in the UK, service providers including garages, repairers, recovery operators, patrols, car hire companies and so on aren't approved by the AA. Neither the insurer not the AA are liable for the acts or omissions of such suppliers. Please note that they may not speak English, so we provide a translation service that's available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you need it. It's also worth remembering that national holidays and working hours vary from country to country.

Will the AA send help if I break down on a foreign motorway?

If you have AA European Breakdown Cover we can arrange assistance in many cases. French motorways are privately managed, however, and the motorway authorities will need to arrange help for you via the official motorway rescue service. The cost of the tow off the motorway can be claimed back within your European Breakdown Cover policy benefit limits. Once you are towed off, call us on 00800 88 77 66 55 for further help.

Can you find a like-for-like replacement hire vehicle if my car is in a garage in Europe?

Unfortunately we can’t as some types of vehicle, such as vans, are almost impossible to find. We won't be able to find vehicles with tow bars and may have to bring back the towed vehicle with the broken-down car. For larger parties we may need to organise two hire cars.

How many claims can I make?

You can make one claim with a Single Trip policy. Annual policies allow you to make up to three claims per year. The total amount you can claim depends on your level of cover.

Can you provide cover for vehicles outside the dimensions stated in the AA European Breakdown Cover terms and conditions?

No, as the limit on vehicle dimensions is determined by the space on the recovery transporters. If we need to recover your vehicle back home we need to be sure that it will fit.

Can you provide cover for specially adapted vehicles?

If your vehicle has been specially adapted, you must let us know before you travel by calling us on 0844 209 0081. Please note that it's unlikely that we'll be able to locate a similarly adapted vehicle overseas. We'll try to work out a suitable alternative method of travel with you.

Does an AA European Breakdown Cover policy cover a bicycle, car, jet-ski or boat carried on a trailer?

Personal effects, goods, vehicles, boats or other waterborne craft on or in your vehicle or trailer are not covered. These remain your responsibility at all times.

Are goods carried in a replacement or recovery vehicle covered by AA European Breakdown Cover?

No, these remain your responsibility at all times. Please check the terms and conditions of your personal travel insurance to see if your goods are covered under these circumstances.

Can an AA European Breakdown Cover policy cover travellers with open-ended tickets?

Cover is valid only for the dates purchased and you should take out cover for the full time you intend to be away. To extend cover from overseas you must contact us before your cover expires and pay an additional premium to keep your cover going. If you don't contact us before it expires, your cover will end and you won't be able to restart it. If you've purchased Annual Multi Trip cover you'll only need to notify us if an individual trip exceeds a maximum of 90 days.

What is the Parts and Labour benefit?

The optional Parts and Labour benefit is available for private cars and helps cover the cost of garage labour and spare parts if you break down abroad (up to £500 with Lite and full cover, or £300 with Short Break). What is AA Five Star cover?

AA European Breakdown Cover used to be called AA Five Star before it was renamed in 2005. We also offer a 5 Star car warranty, but this is a completely different type of cover.
