Levels of cover

All holidays are different, so why expect your breakdown cover to stay the same? We have three levels of European breakdown cover available so you only need to pay for the cover you want.

• Short Break: for when you’re planning a trip to Europe for five days or less and don’t want vehicle recovery or alternative travel/accommodation cover
• Lite cover: provides everything you get with Short Break, but also gives you a higher claim limit, vehicle recovery and alternative travel/accommodation cover
• Full cover: the original and most comprehensive European breakdown cover we offer

For extra peace of mind you can add Parts and Labour Benefit to your cover. Following a breakdown abroad, this allows you to claim up to £500 towards essential parts and labour needed to get your vehicle on the move again.

Countries covered

European breakdown cover applies within the following geographical limits:

If your vehicle travels outside the geographical limits of your policy, you will not be covered for that part of your trip.

Travelling from the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or Isle of Man

If you live in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, your cover will start when you leave home and end when you get back**. So, you’ll be covered if you need help on the way to or from the ferry or Eurotunnel terminal.

Please note, however, that this is not a replacement for our UK breakdown cover. Also, the optional Parts and Labour Benefit only starts when your vehicle has left the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man.

** If you live in Northern Ireland and are travelling to or from the Republic of Ireland, you will only be covered in the Republic of Ireland. There is no cover for travel within Northern Ireland.

AA European Breakdown Cover can be used for any age of vehicle. However, depending on your level of cover we may not be able to provide cover for all types of vehicle.

Trailers

Trailers can be covered on all policy types lasting over five days. However, any costs relating to transporting any items on the trailer won’t be covered.

Restrictions

The following restrictions are in place to make sure that your car or other vehicle can fit onto one of our European breakdown recovery transporters:

• Maximum weight: 3.5 tonnes (3500kgs) gross vehicle laden weight
• Maximum length: 7m (23ft)**
• Maximum width: 2.3m (7ft 6in)**
• Maximum height: 3m (9ft 10in)**

** These dimensions will be calculated taking into account anything attached to your vehicle and any trailer or caravan, including but not limited to towing equipment, any carriers or racks (eg bike or luggage), or anything else attached to the vehicle or the carriers/racks.

Prices above are correct as of 6 September 2011 for a vehicle less than 1 year old driving to France. They include online discounts where available, but exclude any membership discounts. Prices for AA annual policies include a continuous payment discount. Note that the Green Flag annual price includes basic UK membership.

Making a claim

Although we make every effort to cover repair costs on your behalf, sometimes you might have to pay the bill locally and then make a claim when you get home.

Adjusting your cover

As long as your European breakdown cover hasn’t started yet, you can change your vehicle or level of cover. You can also add Parts and Labour Benefit up until the start of your trip.

Once your cover has started, you can still extend it or add countries, as long as you haven’t broken down yet and your cover hasn’t already expired. If you wish to add new countries to your cover, you must purchase cover for a new zone before leaving the zone you are covered in.

Renewing or cancelling your cover

We will write to you a month before your European breakdown cover is due for renewal. If you paid by direct debit, it will automatically renew and the payment will be taken from your account without you having to do anything.
