The first Euro NCAP tests of the X-Trail showed some weaknesses that Nissan decided to address; so retests were allowed on upgraded production cars. The modifications were successful in improving the stability of the body but were not successful in getting the side impact head protecting airbag to work satisfactorily in the pole test. There are areas behind the facia that pose risks to the driver’s and front passenger’s knees. The rearward facing child restraint for the 18 month old had problems in protecting the dummies chest and neck. The pedestrian protection was better than the average so far achieved by other manufacturers.
