These results are a little disappointing for a new car but the X-type has a strong body shell that provides a safe passenger compartment. All the doors could be opened normally after the test. The restraint system on the driver was let down due to his head bottoming out on the steering wheel late in the impact. The Jaguar X Type is the first car Euro NCAP has seen where the manufacturer claims that it is able to recognise when any child restraint is fitted on the front passengers seat and turn off the passenger's airbag. This provides the best way in which to deal with this hazard. The 3 year old was protected in an ISOFIX restraint with a top tether and this worked well. Unfortunately the pedestrian protection was dire.
