In the frontal impact the driver dummy's chest contacted the steering wheel in the frontal test, and structures in the dashboard presented a potential hazard to the knees and femurs of the driver and the passenger. In the side impact test the Idea was tested without the thorax-protection airbag which is available only as an option in most countries. Forces transferred in an unrealistic manner up the test dummy's spine, reducing the forces recorded by the instrumentation in its chest. The car was penalised for this and the protection offered to the chest was rated as 'weak'.
