: As half-term approaches and the nights draw in, Halloween is a great opportunity to give the kids a real treat. From spooky woodland walks by lantern light and ghost train rides to fancy dress fun – there’s plenty to see and do up and down the country. Here’s our pick for 2011.

National Trust, nationwide

There are Spooky Ghost Tours, Creepy Crafts, Halloween Trails and Frightening Tales at lots of National Trust properties throughout the October half-term, as well as family days out.

THE SOUTH

pumpkinEltham Palace, South London

Similarly spooky stuff will be going on at the stunning Eltham Palace, near Greenwich, South London – with creepy crafts, spooky activities and ghost hunting galore. Sunday 23 – Tuesday 25 October from 11am-4pm.

Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway, Oxfordshire

Don your scariest garb and take the Halloween Spooks Express. Dress up in costume for a free gift! 30 October, with multiple departures throughout the day, No booking necessary.

Arundel Wetland Centre, West Sussex

Running for one day only, the centre’s popular Spooky Nature Night gives kids the chance to explore the spooky side of wetland life. Face painting, activity stations and games are all on offer, alongside a spooky nature trail. 30 October 3:30pm-6pm. Booking essential.

Eden Project, Cornwall

A wealth of Halloween activities are on offer this year including a disco, ice skating and face painting. The highlight has to be the Wishcraft tent, which gives kids the opportunity to mix potions, craft a Halloween pumpkin and listen to creepy tales. 28-29 October from 4pm-9pm.

THE NORTH

Croxteth Hall, Liverpool

For Halloween with a difference, Croxteth Hall will be hosting a ‘Murder at the Masquerade’ evening (24-26 October from 7pm-8:30pm) alongside the ‘Halloween run for your LIFE race’, which takes place within the legendary haunted grounds of the manor house (30 October at 11am).

Crook Hall in Durham welcomes the Wicked Witches this Halloween. There’s also a chance to spot the famed ghostly White Lady in the grounds. 28-30 October.

Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre, Sheffield

A fun-filled Halloween Spooktacular - take a Haunted Hayride around the Freaky Forest, play trick or treat on the Witch in the Wood and enjoy top class bird of prey displays. There’s also plenty to do for creative kids, with pumpkin carving, creepy crafts and a fancy dress competition. Weekends throughout October and daily from 22-30 October – 10am-5pm.

Peterborough Museum, Peterborough

A long-time favourite, the museum’s popular Ghost Walk continues to delight and amuse both young and old alike in 2011. Due to popularity, early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. 26-31 October at 7:30pm and 8pm.

WALES

Llanelli Wetland Centre

Visit the Llanelli Wetland Centre for a slice of Halloween fun this half term. Events include a creepy crawly hunt, frightening fungi walk and Halloween craft workshop. Activity days are held throughout the October half term and include a feed the birds walk and even a spot of pond dipping. 22-30 October, from 10:30am – 4pm.

Llandaff, Cardiff

A Ghost Walk Halloween Special is planned this year, involving a two course Halloween Supper, talk and ghost walk. Participants even get their very own dowsing rod to detect nearby spirits! Advanced booking only. 30 October – 7pm onwards.

Cardiff Castle, Cardiff

The ever popular castle tour returns this year for another dose of unexplained noises, dark tales and more. Tours are also available to the Summer Smoking Room at the top of the Clock Tower – reputedly the most haunted place in the castle. Costumes are encouraged. 29-30 October.

SCOTLAND

ghostTraquair House, Innerleithen
Visit Scotland's oldest inhabited house for a day of frightening fun. Traquair House is holding a ghostly treasure trail through the woods, spooky passage experience, games, walks, falconry, workshops and a fancy-dress competition. Sunday 30 October from 11am-4pm.

Glasgow Science Centre

Scary science, workshops and family fancy dress fun make for an unforgettable evening at the Glasgow Science Centre. This hugely popular event kicks off a ‘weekend of fears and phobias’. 28 October.

Kellie Castle and Garden, Fife

A feast of culinary delights – the Halloween Harvest Feast offers guests a meal with a difference in the glorious setting of Kellie Castle’s Drawing Room. Highlights include the Kellie Apple and parsnip curried soup and Ardross Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding – all served in a suitably creepy atmosphere. 28 October from 7:30pm-10pm.

Ghost Walks

For a slice of horrible history, join one of the many ghost walks around the UK. Locations with established tours include London, Edinburgh, Derby, Chester, Nottingham, Bath and York.
