Description

A converted village blacksmiths houses the operation's luxurious fine-dining Bardoulet's restaurant, a bistro/bar and lounge areas. The décor's striking, a combination of traditional with a modern twist; vibrant colours juxtapose soft-toned fabrics, with fabulous table appointments, gilt-edged mirrors and character stone floors all adding to the ambience. Staff are refreshingly helpful, knowledgeable, relaxed but attentive, while the highly accomplished kitchen under Patrick Bardoulet draws on his native homeland to deliver a modern French approach with a nod to traditional Scottish fare. Quality, local fresh seasonal ingredients are combined with flair and vision, while technical skills and execution are top drawer. Think a loin of roe deer served with onion roasted in liquorice, celeriac purée, potato croquette and game jus, or meunière of Dover sole with parsnip purée, razor clams, samphire and a noisette butter sauce, while to finish, perhaps choose between an assiette of honey desserts (soufflé, millefeuille and ice cream) and an iced praline parfait served with lemon shortbread, crushed meringue and champagne custard.

We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end; from the canapes and aperitifs, through courses each more sumptuous than the last, to the petits fours with our coffee. The staff were friendly and informative, making us feel welcome and ensuring we were comfortable without feeling intrusive. We had a very reasonable bottle of Chateau Musar to go with our meal, and were very satisfied. Flawless!

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary with a visit to the Horseshoe Inn and I cannot praise it highly enough. The staff were superbly professional and courteous, the food was out of this world, and the attention to detail and relaxed surroundings made this a dining experience we will never forget. Highly recommended.

Though the food is good, the wine is expensive, the service is poor and slow at the end. The cheese board choice has a limit of 4, which they don't tell you until it's too late. They insisted on deposit at reservation for a family meal and the deposit was not deducted from the final bill. Had we not spotted it we would have been overcharged. A disapointing end with unsympathetic staff.
