Description
It is easy to overuse adjectives when describing the position of Knockinaam Lodge: idyllic and stunning are two that do the job perfectly well. Surrounded by cliffs and woodland with views out over the sea, and even its own private sandy cove, the hotel has an enviable location. Inside, there is oak panelling, rich fabrics and antique furniture, all impeccably tasteful and in keeping with the house. The bight and airy dining room has views over the lawn to the sea, linen-clothed tables and displays of antique china. With a four-course, no-choice menu, the cooking is modern Scottish with local flavours dominating, plus plenty of exciting ideas and an artful style of presentation. Meals are complemented with home-made crisps before lively and imaginative canapés, excellent bread, plus pre-starter, pre-desserts and petits-fours. Balance and integrity is maintained throughout in starters such as grilled fillet of salted cod with chive butter sauce - simple and perfect. Roast breast of Gressingham duck features in a complex main course with haggis beignet, creamed celeriac, potato fondant and a coriander jus.
