Description

Perched on the side of a cliff overlooking the English Channel and the Atlantic beyond, Driftwood does minimalism with soul, awash with chic modern décor in harmony with those stunning blue-horizon views. And you can hear the waves from the garden as you enjoy an alfresco aperitif from the decked area. Contemporary New England is the hotel's style, with neutral colours and a relaxed feel. The smart dining room continues the theme; bright and airy with plenty of windows to take in those views of the bay. Expect highly accomplished cooking with an equally light, contemporary tone, driven by prime quality produce from the abundant local larder (unsurprisingly featuring fresh fish and shellfish from local waters). Quality and consistency are the kitchen bywords, from clean flavours to presentation and clever combinations that surprise and delight the palate throughout, including peripheries like amuse-bouche, breads and petits fours. So expect a threesome like John Dory with St Mawes Bay prawns served with parmesan gnocchi and shellfish sauce, followed by loin and belly of pork perhaps accompanied by butternut squash, pickled apple purée and coco beans with wild mushrooms, and to finish, maybe a pineapple tart Tatin with lemon-grass rice pudding cannelloni and home-made gingerbread ice cream to round of a memorable meal.

I went to this restaurant with high hopes but was slightly disappointed with the service and some of the dishes. The kitchen show some great technical skills in some dishes and lacking in others. Judging by the style of food on offer I would say the head chef reminds me of a young Delia Smith in the making !!

Came to this restaurant expecting high hopes but was slightly disappointed with the service. The food was of a good standard showing some exceptional technical skills but most was on an average scale. Judging by the style of food I would say the head chef reminds me of a young Delia Smith in the making !!
