Description
This sophisticated, smart and buzzy local restaurant - set in a parade of Kew Village shops close to Kew Bridge tube station - is a class act and sister to the venerable Wandsworth restaurant Chez Bruce (see entry). Glass-fronted in keeping with its name (and probably inspired by its neighbour, the Royal Botanic Gardens), its sleek, contemporary décor has a light-and-airy appeal, drawing a loyal crowd of devotees with its vibrant atmosphere and bustling mix of diners. An eclectic mix of furniture, antiques, cushions and drapes blends with well-spaced tables and the appropriately relaxed and friendly yet professional service. The precision cooking is impressive, too, taking an unfussy modern and seasonal approach, distinguished by a light touch and clean, clear flavours. Think rump of veal with calf's sweetbreads, salsify, broad beans and crispy trompettes, or perhaps poached sea bream with scallops, crab, lettuce and samphire, and to finish, a warm ginger cake with banana and pecan ice cream and sauce anglaise. The appealing menu repertoire comes at fixed prices (and includes a seven-course tasting option), while the wine list is a notable affair, with many available by the glass.
