Description
Whatever the season, a visit to this mellow stone, 15th-century manor-house hotel, set in beautiful grounds, is one of life's not-to-be-missed experiences - it's the epitome of luxury and good taste, where modern style and classic virtues combine with truly memorable cooking and exemplary service. And, though Le Manoir may have been accumulating top accolades for more than twenty years, its iconic chef-patron, Raymond Blanc, still fizzes with enthusiasm. On warm summer days you can enjoy aperitifs on the lawn, while during winter months lounges pamper with sophistication and modernity. The dining room is in three parts, with the principal room being a conservatory, plus the Grand Salle, that both continue the contemporary theme. But no visit here would be complete without a stroll round the stunning gardens dotted with life-size bronze statues and, among the delights beyond the garden wall, there's a Japanese garden and teahouse and the all-important organic potager. Producing some 90 types of vegetables and over 70 varieties of herbs for the kitchen, it's fundamental to the Blanc cooking philosophy - freshness, quality and seasonality are vital to the ethos here. This extends to the use and sourcing of local produce - organic where possible - reconnecting gastronomy with local producers. So expect classic French dishes in a modern, light, fresh style with clear, precise flavours, balance and subtlety, delivered with breathtaking skill and immaculate presentation. Take the likes of an assiette of milk-fed lamb from the Pyrenees served with pea purée and roasting jus, and to finish, perhaps tiramisù flavours with cocoa sauce and cream and coffee bean ice cream. And do save room for the dazzling selection of oven-fresh breads, canapés and petits fours that line up alongside a superb wine list. The number of fine chefs who have learned their trade here is a testament to Raymond's supreme commitment to training and ultimately a tribute to the man and the high esteem in which his kitchen and renowned hotel are held. This is a must-do experience.
