Description
Originally built in 1870 for the Mine Captain of the Great Devon Consol, this creeper-clad, archetypal country-house hotel is well established in five acres of wonderful gardens with mature trees, walled gardens and wild orchards. The chic, light and airy restaurant is simply decorated and all eyes are drawn to the windows, where magnificent views can be enjoyed across the Tamar Valley. The mood is romantic at night, when the room is lit by table lanterns. In the kitchen, a well-established team led by Peter Gorton produces modern British cuisine with international influences, drawing on fine seasonal ingredients. Clever combinations produce complementary flavours and textures; sample a starter like tortellini of braised lamb shank with mushroom beurre blanc. A simple but perfectly executed main course choice would be pan-fried brill with creamy jasmine rice and coriander broth. Round off with an exemplary warm chocolate tart with coconut sorbet, pineapple and caramel sauce. The wine list is equally well constructed, offering an extensive selection plus a good range of ports and digestifs.
