Hotel du Vin Bistro at One Devonshire Gardens

Set in a series of Victorian townhouses on a tree-lined terrace in Glasgow's fashionable West End, the Hotel du Vin group has remodelled this contemporary boutique hotel in its usual fine style. The refurbished interior is sympathetic to the original architecture while adding all the modern comforts. The bar-lounge has deep sofas and comfortable chairs, while the popular, atmospheric, oak-panelled bistro follows the theme, though it isn't as typically relaxed as the usual HDV style, offering a more formal fine-dining note here, with tables dressed in their best whites. Staff are well drilled, but relaxed, helpful and knowledgeable, and, as the hotel name suggests, wine is a hallmark theme, with a list to delight backed by a strong sommelier service. The kitchen's repertoire of modern and classic dishes supports the group's philosophy - quality food cooked simply with the freshest local ingredients and attractive presentation. But again, they've cranked up the ante here, with excellent flavours and consistency and all the extra trappings of a fine-dining restaurant, with peripherals like amuse-bouche, breads and petits fours all hitting the spot. Expect dishes like crab and chorizo ravioli to start, followed by butter-roasted loin of border lamb with anchovy beignet, with an almond macaroon served with pistachio ice cream to finish. There's a cosy and inviting whisky snug to be enjoyed too.
