La Trompette

La Trompette is in eminent company as part of an eminent company with Chez Bruce in Wandsworth and The Glasshouse in Kew (see entries). The Chiswick operation cuts quite a dash on Devonshire Road with its immaculately trimmed hedge surrounding a few outside tables, large awning providing protection from the elements (rain or shine) and plenty of glass in the form of sliding doors which really open up the space when the weather allows. The room gives the impression of a brasserie with its oak floors, leather banquette seating, muted tones of brown and tables covered in white linen; it is all very understated and unpretentious yet smart and appealing. Service is confident and knowledgeable and the atmosphere positively buzzes with conviviality. The accomplished cooking has its roots in France, and the South West of the country specifically, although there are broader influences at work. Crisp-fried goujons of lemon sole with tartare sauce is a straightforward starter, or there might be boudin blanc with sautéed spinach, Madeira sauce and pistachio nuts. Main-course roast rump of veal comes with glazed potatoes, spring onions, lardons and veal jus, and desserts can be as globally inspired as iced yuzu parfait with mango sorbet and passionfruit.
