The Road Hole Grill

The huge Old Course Hotel stands proudly overlooking the town of St Andrews, the sea and, most importantly of all, the legendary golf course. The grand hotel has a number of dining options including a pub, a contemporary restaurant called Sands, and the Road Hole Grill, the newly refurbished restaurant on the fourth floor with its coveted views over the famous 17th hole. It now has new floor-to-ceiling windows to maximise the impact of the view, and is an opulent space with oak-panelled walls, chandeliers, leather and carved wooden chairs and tables smartly laid with crisp white linen and quality silverware. A new chef has arrived amid the changes and hit the ground running. Expect all the bells and whistles from canapés to petits fours; what comes between is based on the best Scottish produce cooked with considerable flair. There is an 8-course Tasting Menu and a carte with six dishes per course plus a choice of steaks cooked on the chargrill. Foie gras ballotine with smoked duck, blood orange, pickled rhubarb and watercress is a dish displaying impeccably modern credentials, as is suckling pig - cured leg and braised belly - with carrot purée, spring cabbage, fennel, apple and liquorice jus. These are well crafted and impressive dishes showing good technical skill and balance of flavours. Valrhona Araguani chocolate fondant pudding with vanilla parfait and sour cherry foam makes a stunning finish. Service is formal, professional and friendly. Adjacent is a great bar also refurbished with those fabulous new windows.
