The Grosvenor Arms
Description
Sometimes described as a 'large, rather austere Victorian governess of a building', the Grosvenor was the work of a locally infamous mid-Victorian architect who, in the name of progress, destroyed many fine medieval buildings in and around Chester. It is endearing nonetheless, and viewed from the garden it's a delight of higgledy-piggledy rooflines and soft, warm Cheshire brick. The spacious, open-plan interior includes an airy conservatory and a panelled, book-filled library. On the bistro-style menu are a range of sandwiches and unusual starters such as oxtail potato cake with poached egg; and seared squid with lightly spiced couscous. Main courses range from straightforward cottage or fish pie, to rump of lamb or duck breast served with crushed dauphinoise potatoes. Desserts include the ever-popular bread and butter pudding, served here with apricot syrup. An outside terrace leads into a small but pleasing garden which, in turn, takes you out to the village green.
