Description
There has been an inn on this site since the 16th-century, though the previous version was partially destroyed in a fire in 1900. What remained was too dilapidated to restore, and the present Victorian-Tudor model was built a year later. In a spooky twist, a woman holding a child is said to haunt the main staircase and cellar, though what era she dates back to nobody can say. On the comfortably comprehensive daily-changing menu starters and main dishes might include rabbit rillettes; teriyaki chicken skewers; and baked figs with rocket and air-dried ham, to be followed by classic cassoulet; ham hock with mustard and cider sauce' or smoked haddock and mussel casserole topped with a poached egg. Light bites and sandwiches are also available. In addition to Greene King IPA and Abbot ales, there's an impressive range of malt whiskies and wines by the glass.
