The Sugar Loaf Inn
Description
The Sugar Loaf lies within the gently rolling Chiltern Hills, just a short drive from excellent walks in the Chess Valley. Built in the classic style of the late 1930's, the Sugar Loaf was originally a hotel serving the nearby Chalfont and Latimer station. Nowadays, locals populate the comfortably furnished bar, with its oak panelled walls, wooden floors, bespoke lighting and blinds. There are open fires in winter, whilst a private rear garden and decked seating to the front and side are popular on balmy days. A range of whiskies, brandies, chilled vodkas and champagnes augments a good selection of real ales and a dozen wines served by the glass. Food service is informal, and there's an eat-anywhere policy. Simple, fresh ingredients and uncomplicated presentation characterise the menu, which offers a choice of classic European dishes with a modern twist. Lunchtime light bites and starters include mushroom and celeriac soup with garlic croutons; and roast butternut squash risotto with toasted pine nuts, as well as an appetising selection of speciality focaccia sandwiches. Main course options range from pub favourites to more adventurous dishes: try honey-roast ham with free-range eggs and chips; local Amersham sausages with spring onion mash and grain mustard jus; grilled haloumi with fresh ratatouille, spinach and polenta; grilled sea bass with roast vegetable and couscous salad; or roast cod fillet with parsnip and herb mash, mange tout and roast lemon dressing. Daily blackboard specials include lobster, oysters and game in season, and there's an all day roast on Sundays.
