Rhydspence Inn
Description
Once a manor house, the Rhydspence Inn was also a favourite watering hole for Welsh and Irish drovers taking cattle, sheep and geese to market in London. These days the pub is rather more elegant, with a cosy bar and spacious dining room giving way to stunning views over the Wye Valley. The pub also has literary connections, appearing in On The Black Hill by Bruce Chatwin, and apparently acting as a site of inspiration for Shakespeare while penning Much Ado About Nothing. Food options range from simple bar snacks such as steak and kidney pie or beef lasagna to more elaborate dining: perhaps honey-fried scallops with a lime, soy and ginger dressing, followed by roast monkfish on sweet pepper compote. The friendly ghost of a former landlady is said to frequent the inn, though only when young children are staying.
