L'Autre Pied

New sibling to David Moore and Shane Osborn's well-established and much revered Mayfair big brother, Pied à Terre, L'Autre Pied is its less-formal offshoot situated just off Marylebone High Street. At the helm in the kitchen is Osborn protégé Marcus Eaves, whilst joining him is Eaves' brother Jason - formerly sous chef at Cheltenham's Le Champignon Sauvage. As you'd expect, this is no run-of-the-mill brasserie with a generic menu, but a highly classy affair with an ambience of relaxed, unbuttoned formality. There's a small bar at the front and bespoke furnishings; lovely touches include hand-painted artwork depicting flowers and spices on backlit glass screens (with an oriental nod), silk wallpapers and opulently grained wood tables with inbuilt placemats. The modern European cooking is an equally classy affair. Superbly executed, well balanced, refined dishes of flavour are delivered via a seasonal repertoire of both humble (think braised pork belly, braised cheeks and aromatic cooking jus) and luxury ingredients (ballotine of foie gras with quince purée and wild rocket, or haunch of venison served with pumpkin and orange purée and a port sauce) on a winter carte, with perhaps apple bavarois with blackberry sorbet and cinnamon crème fraîche to finish. The repertoire also offers a value fixed-price lunch/pre-theatre option and five-course surprise tasting affair. Our advice: eat here before the secret gets out.
