A serious addition to the London restaurant scene from its opening in 2006 (formerly Pengelley's), this Gordon Ramsay backed venture - set among the fashionable, top-end boutiques of Knightsbridge - has the acclaimed, ex-Greenhouse chef, Bjorn van der Horst at the helm. Inside exudes style and quality, with service predominantly French, highly professional and appropriately understated. The brown and beige colour scheme uses natural materials to good effect, with an abundant use of wood panelling and slate-effect tiles on walls. Tables are well spaced, with leather banquette booths at both ends and contemporary artwork to break up the somewhat 1960's styling and ambience. The kitchen's modern approach is assured, innovative and classy, with great emphasis placed on sourcing top-quality, seasonal ingredients. Presentation is equally stylish, in places even guéridon in style, with waiting staff decanting items cooked and served au feu, for instance. Appealing to the eye and living up to expectation on the palate, dishes exude clean flavours, balance, texture and colour interest, and are delivered via an exceptional range of fixed-price menus that truly explore the seasons. Take black bream en papillote with chestnuts, fig and salsify, and a guanaja chocolate marquise with toasted brioche and praline shake on an autumn repertoire.
