Description
Set within the chic, designer City hotel adjacent to Liverpool Street station, '1901' (formerly the Aurora) is a stunning, palatial Victorian dining room dominated by a majestic stained-glass dome, while ceilings also reach lofty cathedral height and there are pillars and high-arched windows. Billowing voiles in deep red and grey and enormous, striking funky chandeliers keep things contemporary while making the most of the original architecture. A stylish, brushed-steel bar lines one side of the room, while service is knowledgeable, slick and professional. The kitchen's modern European approach - underpinned by a classical theme - is delivered via an appealing range of menus that make the best of tip-top seasonal produce. Exciting dishes of flair, imagination and flavour deliver with elegant simplicity and clean presentation to fit the fine-dining City bill; take Pyrenees milk-fed lamb served with peas, broad beans, morels and garlic, or perhaps steamed Cornish brill with spring vegetables and lemon thyme, while a rhubarb vanilla pannacotta with poached rhubarb foam and purée might catch the eye at dessert. There's the addition of a daily lunchtime carving trolley - of imposing dimensions - serving more traditional roasts, plus a seven-course dégustation option, excellent breakfasts - for early-morning business meetings - and a big-hitting wine list to complete the slick package.
